For the truly entrepreneurial school there are real opportunities to play a key role in the community development. This can provide creative contexts for learning. It can give students the entrepreneurial mind-sets they’ll need to thrive in tomorrow’s world. It’s no longer just about teaching and tokenistic work experience. It’s about preparing young people for a world very different from the one we know.

Support for schools is changing too. Academies and Free Schools in particular enjoy unparalleled levels of autonomy. I have been a Chair of Governors and understand both the culture and barriers to change. I can help them become more entrepreneurial. For example:

Putting together a cross sector partnership that will enable a special needs school to generate income and move to a new £8m campus in 2015;
I’ve developed a way to make it easier for even very small businesses to take on an apprentice. This involves removing much of the bureaucracy and risk and involving sponsors with an interest in reducing youth unemployment. Supporting a successful bid for an ‘alternative’ Free School.
