About Quirky and clever, humble and human, Robert Ashton is direct and outspoken. He’s also tolerant and always makes time to listen. That’s why he’s called the Barefoot Entrepreneur; fiercely focused on the goal, yet he treads lightly as he goes.
Robert was born in 1955. In common with many highly intelligent people, he was a shy solitary child who did badly at school. His strong sense of justice and equality are rooted in his school days when he was misunderstood and overlooked. He went on to study agriculture at college and embarked on a corporate sales and marketing career.Redundancy in 1990 set him free from his past, providing the stimulus and opportunity to grow and flourish. Since then he’s started and sold businesses, written 12 books and started a successful charity. He’s also a campaigner with particular interest in mental health. He is very modest about his own success, preferring to encourage and inspire others to realise their dreams. An accomplished social entrepreneur his activism in 2005 started a Community Foundation that five years later is close to having a £4m endowment. In the past 12 months it has distributed more than £750k in grants to voluntary and community groups. You can find out more about the Norfolk Community Foundation on their website here. Inquisitive, intuitive and at times intellectual, he explores paradoxes, exposes myths and challenges the status quo. Empathic and sensitive, he treads paths others choose to avoid, learning, reflecting and sharing his interpretation and experience. Happily married to Belinda for almost 30 years, Robert lives in a converted barn in Norfolk. They have two grown up children, one a city trader, the other an epidemiologist working in East Africa.
