'Why Robert Ashton is so brilliant' blurb for the BIG Lottery Award nomination form, by Oz Osborne (Rethink);

"A local author and activist with personal experience of mental health problems, Robert Ashton was driven to set up the Stuff Stigma campaign in Norwich in 2006 during Rethink’s health awareness pilot in the city. Actually it was the negative national media coverage of the pilot, which used powerful images such as a statue of Winston Churchill in a straight jacket to challenge people’s negative attitudes about mental illness, which stirred Robert into action.

By March 2007 Robert’s passion and drive to challenge the prejudice and discrimination faced by local people with mental health problems, led to him organising the inaugural Stuff Stigma conference. Over 200 people attended and were inspired to act by inspirational speakers, such as Lord Andrew Mawson, who talked about the activism behind the Bromley by Bow regeneration project. Robert’s vision in attracting a speaker of this calibre, who had led a world-leading community project, awoke a spirit of change in the people of Norfolk and laid the foundations for an ongoing project.

Robert, sensing that Stuff Stigma could reach further than Norfolk, applied for BIG Lottery funding through the Time to Change (then Moving People) Well-being Portfolio and was successful in being offered a grant of more than £200,000.

Stuff Stigma is now running activities that encourage well-being and challenge discrimination that have directly reached more than 4000 people locally, and been seen as pilots for work across the UK. None of this would be possible without the talent, drive and vision of Robert Ashton."

"Reading your book has re-ignited and reminded me of the reasons for setting up this business in the beginning and has made me determined to succeed. It has even given me the confidence to write a business plan and look at my figures!"

              Sharon Fernandez, The Baby Book

"We work with people who want to grow their business and in seven years have only found four people we're 100% confident to recommend to our clients.  One of those is Robert Ashton.  He is practical, real world and great fun to work with.  If you have questions, his books will give you answers."

              Ian Christelow, ActionCOACH Managing Director

"Hi Robert!  Had a great chance to read your book The Life Plan. Amazing contents with great insight have been reflected in each title. It helped me a lot."

"What Robert Ashton doesn't know about entrepreneurship isn't worth knowing.  Unlike other authors who are all about theory rather than practical advice, Robert gets straight to the point of what it takes to start and run a successful business."

"I think 'How To Start Your Own Business...For Entrepreneurs' is a great tool and superbly laid out in a clear and concise manner, which is essential when you need to cut through the jargon."

"I like Robert - he's a human-scale entrepreneur on a talk-circuit dominated by supposedly super-human entrepreneurs who most of us find it hard to relate to. He talks a lot of sense."

Advice

"It has been such a relief to find an advisor that actually understands what running a social enterprise is all about, especially in such a specialist area as radio.

I have been impressed by his appropriate advice, immediate feedback and links with the right people.  I will be keeping this link with Robert for as long as possible.

I would certainly recommend his services to others that are running a social enterprise or seeking business advice generally."

              Dave Hatherly, Wayland Community Radio

"My business has really gathered momentum since meeting Robert. I had been working on ideas that seemed to me to be a little fragmented and without a clear focus.

My perception of my first meeting with Robert was of a stimulating but somewhat unstructured chat. However, I came away from that meeting with a clear vision of a business that integrated all my interests under a unified theme that accurately represented my unique approach.

In addition, by having confidence in me, and in my business idea, Robert gave me confidence in myself."
