Could you pass the ‘test of contribution’?

I recently heard BBC journalist and presenter George Alagiah speak in Norwich. He was promoting his latest book at a literary event, but was quickly drawn into the subject of multiculturalism.
He made one very interesting point. It is he says not important where we were or our parents were born. What matters is the extent to which we contribute to the country in which we all live. This he called the ‘test of contribution’.
His point of course is that there are many immigrants who have brought about huge, positive changes here. Equally, there are many who have been here for generations who do nothing but complain.
If someone dragged you off your sofa to take the ‘test of contribution’, what would you be able to offer as evidence of positive, proactive citizenship of our country? It’s a good question isn’t it . . . . .
