NORWICH STUFF STIGMA CONFERENCE – 02 FEB 07

The conference forms part of a larger campaign led by Robert Ashton with the following objectives:
• Stimulate and support more effective collaboration between mental health organisations (voluntary & statutory) and local employers.
• Encourage the development of a ‘ground up’ strategy for the long term reduction of stigma and discrimination
• Maintain and grow public awareness of the need to reduce stigma, improving employment prospects for people with mental health problems
• Provide a ‘best practice’ model that demonstrates how an initial anti-stigma campaign can be launched, then effectively embedded and focused within a community with measurable, positive benefits.
The campaign follows the successful ‘anti-stigma pilot’ project staged by Rethink in March 06 and is endorsed by Dr Ian Gibson MP who is strongly supportive of the need for innovation in this area.
Rethink’s Norwich media campaign:
• Doubled the proportion of people willing to admit to a mental illness
• Encouraged 54% more people to admit that they cared for someone with a mental illness
• Reduced by 25% the proportion of people who thought that schizophrenics are likely to be violent towards others
• Doubled the number of people who would admit to having a mental health problem should it happen to them in the future

• Primary and secondary mental healthcare workers
